Training for an hour a day isn't going to make up for 23 hours of sitting on your bum.
What is it that separates the couch potato from the weekend warrior, athlete
and champion? Motivation is a major factor, but sometimes even motivation isn't
enough to create a change. In martial arts we have a saying, “you don't
choose the martial arts, the martial arts choose you”. This implies that
despite your goals or best intentions, you are still subject to circumstance
and the effects of your environment. You may be the most talented and motivated
martial artist, but perhaps you face an injury, training conflicts with your
schedule or there are simply no good instructors near your location. Conversely,
you may have no interest in martial arts, but one of the best dojos in the world
is down the block from you, the classes fit your schedule and a friend has invited
you to go. You may find you get the bug and start to find yourself there more.
Even if you don't particularly enjoy the training, you will get better by simply
being present. This concept of you not choosing the art and having the art choose
you means that many of the factors that separate the champion from the also-rans
are beyond human comprehension and logic. These end-results of success take
a more cosmic reasoning. However, there are factors that we know and agree upon
to be keys to success. For instance, if you want to get fit, you need to at
least show up at the gym. Once you get yourself there, try coming more often.
If you're training hard, get good rest. If you want to look like an athlete,
you have to train like one. Based on your goals, needs and abilities, we can
cultivate progressive habits.
This section includes mental strategies for ensured success, tangible living
